Principles of Health Science
The Principles of Health Science is a foundational course for students in Grades 9-10 that can be followed up with further courses encouraging medical exploration, providing a broad overview of the healthcare industry, from therapeutic and diagnostic care to health informatics and biotechnology research. Students explore key healthcare careers and develop essential knowledge in medical terminology, learning the roots, prefixes, suffixes, and abbreviations that form the language of medicine. These courses also introduce anatomy and physiology, giving students an understanding of the human body's structure, function, and systems, as well as pharmacology, covering how natural and synthetic agents affect the body, including drug classifications and safe medication administration. Grounded in legal, ethical, and safety responsibilities, this course equips students with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to pursue a wide range of careers in health science.
Practicum in Health Science
The Practicum in Health Science is a capstone, work-based learning course, either paid or unpaid, that provides practical application of previously studied health knowledge and skills. Typically, it allows 12th grade students to work in healthcare settings, demonstrating professional, ethical, and clinical skills while, optionally, preparing for certifications like CCMA or EKG.
